Computer errors allow violent prisoners to be released

leave a comment »

These prisoners were placed on “non-revocable parole”, which means they DO NOT have to report to parole officers. The only way they can be sent back to prison is to be convicted of another crime.

Maybe there should have been some sort of fail-safe for software that controls such important decisions? Like maybe a human being involved?

LA Times:

Computer errors prompted California prison officials to mistakenly release an estimated 450 inmates with “a high risk for violence” as unsupervised parolees in a program meant to ease overcrowding, according to the states inspector general.

Doctors: all your review are belong to us

leave a comment »

I don’t understand why they would even want to censor their patients. Unless of course they are bad doctors. I don’t think I would ever go to a doctor that would want me to sign something like this.

From arstechnica.com:

When I walked into the offices of Dr. Ken Cirka, I was looking for cleaner teeth, not material for an Ars Technica story. I needed a new dentist, and Yelp says Dr. Cirka is one of the best in the Philadelphia area. The receptionist handed me a clipboard with forms to fill out. After the usual patient information form, there was a “mutual privacy agreement” that asked me to transfer ownership of any public commentary I might write in the future to Dr. Cirka. Surprised and a little outraged by this, I got into a lengthy discussion with Dr. Cirka’s office manager that ended in me refusing to sign and her showing me the door….

One of my favorite wrestlers.  And on of the greatest. RIP

TMZ:

TMZ spoke with Randy’s brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM … and lost control of his vehicle.

Ashton Kutcher to Lead Two and a Half Men?

leave a comment »

I like Ashton Kutcher. Having said that, I’ll be suprised if the show lasts a full season with him as lead.

From Cinemablend.com:

Two and a Half Men has a new leading man. CBS hasn’t issued an official statement (yet) but word is, a deal has been struck and the man set to replace Charlie Sheen in the CBS series is none other than Ashton Kutcher.

Best Buy Fires Employee for Tackling Thief

Hehe… I don’t know who’s side to be on. I hope he finds a better job!

At most big retailers, shoplifters are allowed to run free, because any attempt to touch them brings up the terrifying prospect of a lawsuit. But a Montana Best Buy employee wasn’t having that, taking down a thief. Now he’s fired….

Pandora to Bring The Funny!

leave a comment »

One of the things I miss most after giving up my XM Radio service is losing the comedy channels. But now, my favorite music service is bringing the funny! Pandora’s latest press release says the company will start streaming comedy along with your favorite music!

Pandora Press Release:

PANDORA DEBUTS PERSONALIZED COMEDY

• Just like music stations on Pandora, comedy stations can be personalized to each individual’s taste

• Powered by the Comedy Genome Project™

• Listeners can create comedy stations based on their favorite comedians, or on popular genres such as political comedy, working class comedy, PG comedy, or comedy from the 2000s, 60s and 70s, or 80s and 90s

OAKLAND, Calif. MAY. 4, 2011 – Pandora, the popular internet radio service, today announced that comedy is now available on the service where radio stations can be created and Personalized.

Pandora, known for pioneering personalized music listening and discovery, is broadening its array of content to include comedy in order to meet the requests of its listeners. A team of Comedy Genome Project analysts at Pandora has analyzed thousands of performances to capture their comedic style and content. Additional comedic material is being analyzed daily.

Pandora Founder and Chief Strategy Officer Tim Westergren said, “Pandora is about creating a great, personalized radio experience. Comedy is a natural part of that experience, and it’s something our listeners have been asking us to deliver for a while. We are delighted to now be able to give people a mix of familiar and new comic material that they’ll love to listen to.”

Starting today people can listen to comedy on Pandora in the same manner that they listen to music: by choosing a favorite artist or genre as a seed to start a station and then giving thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback to shape the station to their individual taste. Like music stations on Pandora, comedy stations will play the seed artist and related material.

John Hyde, Vice Chairman of Image Entertainment, Inc. said, “Everyone knows Pandora – it’s unique in the entertainment industry for personalizing the radio experience for listeners and enabling talented artists to discover audiences that will love their music. Image is delighted that our comedy content is being included in the Comedy Genome Project and believe that Pandora’s reach with so many listeners offers an unprecedented opportunity for all comedians. It’s going to be fascinating to see how personalized radio tackles the comedy listening experience, it’s a new frontier and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

RTO Assholes Aarons Spies on Customers

leave a comment »

Arstechnica reports that rent-to-own company Aarons is using software on computers it rents out to spy on it’s customers. They are using key loggers (which would give them access to usernames and passwords, as well as credit card and other account numbers), and actually turning on webcams to capture pictures and video. WTF?

Built-in webcams are becoming more and more common in computers these days, and in turn, they are becoming more and more of a liability. A Wyoming couple is now accusing national rent-to-own chain Aaron’s Inc. of spying on them at home using their rented computer’s webcam without their knowledge. Aaron’s also allegedly used a keylogger and took regular screenshots of the couple’s activities on the machine, leading the couple to file a class-action lawsuit in the US District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
